Bachelor of Fine Art Education Programme
Programme Description
The Bachelor of Fine Art Education (BFA Ed.) is an undergraduate programme run by the Department of Vocational and Technical Education (VOTEC). It is an amalgamated programme that combines the teaching of the theories, principles and practices of Painting and Sculpture with pedagogy and entrepreneurship training. The programme equips graduates with a broad-based theoretical knowledge and practical skills in 21st century painting and sculpture. This enables graduates to effectively teach Visual Arts courses in pre-tertiary educational intuitions, as well as start and operate their own Art Establishments or become effective managers in the Fine Art industry.
The programme offers students the opportunity to specialise in Painting or Sculpture. For a specialisation in painting, the programme offer courses including: Introduction to Painting Technology, Figure Drawing, Landscape Drawing (Dry and Wet Media), Portraiture, Cartoon Illustration, Sequential Illustration, Abstract Painting, Structural Painting, Animation, Digital Art, Interior Design and Decoration. For Sculpture, the course offered include the following: Material Technology in Sculpture, Introduction to Electrical Installation and Plumbing Technology, Modelling, Wood Carving, Stone Carving, Reproduction Technology (Mould Making & Casting), Metal Casting, Assemblage and Construction, Mixed-media Sculpture, Computer Application in Sculpture, Life Casting.
Target Group
The programme targets the following:
- SHS Visual Arts graduates
- Technical school graduates
- Diploma in Basic Education holders with Visual Arts background
- HND holders of Visual Arts programmes from Polytechnic and other recognised tertiary institutions
- Visual Arts practitioners (painters and sculptors) who meet the basic minimum University admission requirements.
Admission Requirements (Regular)
The following are eligible for the programme:
- SSSCE with credit passes (A-D) in three core subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies and credit passes (A-D) in the following electives: General Knowledge in Art plus TWO of the following electives: Graphic Design or Picture Making, Sculpture, Ceramic, Leatherwork, Jewellery and Basketry and Textile Design.
- WASSCE with credit passes (A1–C6) in three core subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies and credit passes (A1–C6) in the following electives: General Knowledge in Art plus TWO of the following electives: Graphic Design, Picture Making, Sculpture, Ceramic, Leatherwork, Jewellery, Basketry and Textile Design.
- NABTEX Certificate II holders with at least credit passes in THREE core subjects including English Language, Mathematics plus Integrated Science or Social Studies or Technical Drawing plus credit passes in THREE elective subjects of the Creative Art/Painting and Decorating, Printing and Photography programmes.
- Diploma in Education holders from accredited tertiary institutions with background in Painting and Decorating Craft or Visual Art.
- HND Commercial or Industrial Art (Painting or Sculpture option) from recognised tertiary institutions
- Diploma in Painting or Sculpture holders from universities and accredited international professional institutions with at least a second class lower and credits in WASSCE/SSSCE core English and Mathematics.
- Mature Students: This category of candidates must be at least 25 years before admission and show proof of age with birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth. Candidate must take and pass entrance examinations organised by the University of Cape Coast. Prospective candidates must also have at least two years working experience. They must submit a certificate or testimonial from a supervisor and a personal art portfolio. Apart from the University matured entrance examination, such candidates must as well pass a departmental interview.
- Foreign Students holding qualifications that are internationally acceptable for admission into Universities
Note: Applicants of categories d-f must pass departmental selection interview. Such applicants will be admitted to level 200.
