We offer comprehensive education in the exciting fields of clothing design, pattern drafting, clothing construction and entrepreneurship.

Our Journey

Our Clothing and Textiles programme functions as an option under the Home Economics Programme under the Department of Vocational and Technical Education, which was established in 1993 to train qualified educators in Vocational, and Technical Education to take up teaching and supervisory roles in Education and the Service industry. Currently our programme is ran with about 150 students with our larger population being females and a constantly increasing number of males.
Academic Programmes
Clothing and Textiles is offered as a major programme under the Bachelor of Education in Home Economics programme at the Bachelors level and at the Master of Philosophy level in Home Economics at both regular and sandwich basis. Our programme offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers various aspects of the industry. Courses such as fashion illustration, tailoring, pattern making, textiles and fibres, entrepreneurship, dynamics in the fashion industry and many others are all geared at preparing our students towards developing technical skills, encourage critical thinking and fostering creativity.

They bring a wealth of industry knowledge and expertise to the classroom, ensuring that you receive a well- rounded education that combines theory with practical application.
Our Students
We believe our students are the core of our programme. The current student body consists of over 170 students. Through internships and hosting various events such as fashion shows, exhibitions and small business fairs, our students showcase their works, learn from industry experts and connect with fellow students and professionals.
Facilities and Resources
Our priority to engage our students in both theory based and hands on practicals is met with our ever-ready clothing production rooms, pattern drafting tools and equipment. The faculty library also offers students all the comprehensive learning materials for research. All these facilities and resources are in place to encourage innovation and broaden the knowledge and skill base of our students.
Career Prospects
Graduates of our programme although trained as professional educators for the various educational levels are also equipped with skills to pursue entrepreneurial careers like production and marketing of clothing, batik and tie and dye production, fashion illustration, stylist and ultimately applying their knowledge to solving contemporary human problems.
Looking Ahead
We are putting plans in place to introduce our Doctor of Philosophy in Home Economics programme to advance our researches and broaden our scope in the field of clothing. Digital pattern making and design programmes are also being reviewed. We aim at providing a more supportive environment where students can explore their unique design aesthetics, develop their own fashion collections and dive into an advanced 3D fashion world of designing.

Bachelor of Education in Home Economics

Programme Description

The Bachelor of Education in Home Economics (B.Ed. Home Economics) is an undergraduate programme run by the Department of Vocational and Technical Education (VOTEC). The programme has two specialised areas namely: Food and Nutrition and Clothing and Textiles, with Home Management as core. The philosophy of the programme is to equip students with knowledge, skills and attitudes for employment as educators, trainers, supervisors and leaders in education and the service sectors of the economy. The programme enables students develop competencies in all the specialised areas of Home Economics for teaching at the pre-tertiary level of education and for employment in the related sectors of the economy. In addition, the programme equips students with entrepreneurial skills to be able to start and operate their own clothing or food establishment.

For a specialisation in Food and Nutrition the programme offer courses in Nutrition and Health, Meal Managementm Food Production, Food Biochemistry, Food Microbilogy, Food Safety and Sanitation, Food Storage and Preservation. For a specialisation in Clothing and Textiles courses offered include : Introduction to Clothing and Textiles, Clothing and Textiles Practicum, Pattern Drafting I, Clothing Construction, Tailoring, Dynamics of the Fashion Industry, Clothing Management, Textiles Fibers and Fabrics and Specialized Clothing Construction. Course offered in the core area include : Family Studies, Family Resource Management, Personal Finance, Housing Management, Home Improvement

Target Group

The programme targets the following people :

  1. Senior  High School graduates
  2. Technical School graduates
  3. Diploma in Basic Education holders with background in Home Economics
  4. HND holders  in Fashion, Catering and Hospitality programmes from Polytechnic and other recognised tertiary institutions.
  5. Higher Pre-HND intermediate or advance certificate holders
  6. Fashion and catering practitioners who meet the basic minimum university admission requirements

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements for the various categories of applicants are as follows:

SSSCE Applicants

SSSCE holders with credit passes (A-D) in three core subjects including English language and Mathematics and three credit passes (A-D) in the following electives: Management in Living and either Food and Nutrition or Clothing and Textiles together with one (1) other elective, preferably Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Economics, Fine Arts or French.

WASSCE Applicants

WASSCE holders with credit passes (A1–C6) in three core subjects including English language and Mathematics and three credit passes (A1–C6) in the following electives: A minimum pass of C6 in Management in Living and either Food and Nutrition or Clothing and Textile together with one (1) other elective, preferably Chemistry, Biology, Physics,  Economics, Fine Arts or French.

Higher Pre-HND Technician applicants:

  1. Must have completed an intermediate or advance programme in 812/1, 812/2, Cookery Hospitality & Catering or Fashion Designing accredited by NABPTEX.
  2. Must have passed in all subjects including Core English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies.

Higher National Diploma (HND) candidates must possess:

  1. HND (Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management / Hospitality Management) or HND (Fashion Design).
  2. Must have attained a minimum of 3rd Class Division.

Mature Students

This category of candidates must be at least 25 years before admission  and show proof of age with birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof  of date of  birth. The prospective candidate will be required to take examinations conducted by the University as applicable and must also pass the selection interview in the specialised area organised by the  Department.

Note: The duration of the programme for HND applicants is three years as students have to take professional education courses in addition to content courses that include a second teaching subject- Management in Living.
